Come Fly a Kite and Ride a Bike!

Greetings fellow northlanders! WAKO is officially starting up again and we have scheduled our first event for next Tuesday, April 26, 2011. We will be having a kite flying and bike riding get together down near Bayview Park (across from Pamida) from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We will be gathering down on the grassy area to the west of the playground where the lakefront trail has a loop. Kids can ride their bikes around the loop, fly kites in the middle grassy area, and we'll do a potluck when we're all worn out!

Autumn Day At The Apple Orchard

On Wednesday October 8th WAKO hosted its annual apple orchard event. We have been very happy with Blue Vista Orchard as they have such a kid friendly atmosphere and plenty of room to run! Several families showed up to enjoy the crisp fall day ... enjoy the pictures!

Baby Lucy and Kaylee have a serious talk about the beautiful fall day :) The apple press was a huge hit for all the kids!
Mmmm, the foam from the press is delicious! The huge pumpkins were also a point of interest :)
Run, run, run all that energy away!
Thanks to Jane Anderson for hosting this wonderful event and for taking the pictures!!!

Belated Update

My Dearest WAKO Friends,

I am so sorry I haven't kept up on our WAKO Blog! Although I find it a useful tool when introducing new people to Women And Kids Outdoors, I know many of you rely on regular e-mails to update you regarding events and I have found it difficult to find the time to manage both aspects of advertisement. I will try to do better!

UPDATE:

This summer WAKO hosted three events.

In June we had a "Welcome Summer" park playdate at Kreher park in Ashland. The weather was cold and rainy but several families came to enjoy the playground and share a pinic lunch ... it was a nice way to start summer vacation!

In July we went to Whittelsey Creek Flower Farm to walk the groomed trails, enjoy tractor rides, share a picnic lunch, and pick flowers! Many families took advantage of this opportunity to visit Whittelsey Creek Farms and socialize with other WAKO families.

My children LOVED picking flowers and especially enjoyed the "tractor tour" :)

In August WAKO hosted it's annual Long Lake event. I dropped the ball on this one and forgot to send out an e-mail advertising this event (my family scheduled too many vacations in August!). However, a couple families still showed up to swim and play at Long Lake :)

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR EVENTS AT A GLANCE TO SEE WHAT'S COMING UP WITH WAKO!
In addition to sending out emails I will try to keep this page updated as much as possible!

Roll in the Earth Day (Rescheduled)

This morning (Tuesday May 6th) a huge group of moms and kids gathered at Prentice Park for WAKO's Third Annual "Roll in the Mud Day". Some of the brave kids ran straight for the mud, but it took some longer to warm up to the idea of getting soaked :) The girls really got into it when they heard there was a "buried treasure" in the puddle ... even a mom got involved to make sure each child went home with a jewel. Most families brought lunches to enjoy at the picnic tables, and WAKO provided dirt cake (with gummi worms - perfect for the occasion!). Prentice Park is a perfect location for this event because of the fun playground equipment (appropriate for the littlest WAKOs), accessible picnic tables, and splashy mud! Everyone agreed the event was a success!
Benny and Ayden ran straight for the mud puddle!
But Benny quit when he got mud in his face :(
Lunch and dessert are always a favorite part of the event!
The Dugger's, Zak's, and Moravchik's really got into the idea of a treasure hunt! We buried "gems" in the mud for the kids to dig up and take home. Thankfully Sarah was there to make sure the loot was shared amogst all the treasure hunters :)
After a new change of clothes some of the kids headed towards the playground for some fun on the slides :)
I will add these pictures to WAKO's ongoing albums at Shutterfly ... use the username womenandkidsoutdoors@hotmail.com and the password eventphotos to view the albums, order pictures, or add some of your own photos of an event!

Winter Celebration

A small gathering of WAKO friends met on Friday December 7th to celebrate the season at the Washburn School Forest. The snow gave a chance to play and the warm cabin was the site for some fun crafts and conversation. Enjoy the pictures!
The kids did some serious crafting and chatting indoors!

Well ... maybe not so SERIOUS :)

But ... smiles all around!
WAKO-Palooza
Our next event is on Saturday December 29th ... join WAKO for one last romp in the '07 snow on Siskiwit Lake near Cornucopia. We'll have an opportunity to snowshoe, ski, and play in the snow amongst friends! Bring your ice fishing gear if you'd like! We'll enjoy some fluffy snow, beautiful scenery, and the company of WAKO. We plan on building a campfire; we'll provide wild rice soup and hot cider ... bring a dish to share! For directions email WAKO at womenandkidsoutdoors@hotmail.com or contact Angie Tenebrini at 715-417-0251.

Zifko's Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch

It was cooler than last year, but many families still showed up to enjoy the fun at Zifko's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch with WAKO on Tuesday, October 22nd. WAKO sent each family through the maze; after six scarecrows were discovered it was off to the pumpkin pile to claim your prize! Our host, Jill Zifko, brought festive treats and cider was also provided. Enjoy the pictures!

Friendly Valley Beach

AN EVENING LAKESIDE...

10 adults and 7 kids braved stiff winds off the lake to have a wonderful evening around the campfire at Friendly Valley Beach. Lack of swimsuits, and whitecaps on the lake, didn't stop the kids from going directly into the water despite their parent's protests. The hot dogs, s'mores and other dishes were wonderful and kept us all munching and talking until sunset.

Enjoy the following pictures of Chequamegon families enjoying Gitchie Gumee; take a look at our photo albums to see more WAKO fun at www.imagestation.com (use the link to the right). Our username is wakophotos and our password is eventphotos. We hope to see you pictured at an event soon!

Madeline Island Camping

Moms 'n Kids Overnight
Madeline Island
June 22-23, 2007

It was a successful, and most importantly FUN, camping trip on Madeline Island last weekend when 9 moms and 10 kids showed up to share food and good ol' fashioned fun in the great outdoors! In true "island time" fashion the weather was perfect (we couldnt've ASKED for better), the beach was beautiful, the food was abundant, and friends became family. We arrived on the island Friday afternoon around 4:00 to set up tents and start the campfire. After a dinner of hot dogs, baked beans, grapes, chips, and Jo's delicious pinwheels, we headed to the beach (some of us were even brave enough to submerge). Afterwards we roasted 'mallows and enjoyed s'mores (and sharing s'more recipes!) while the kids played a rowdy game of "hair monster" around the site. We turned in around 10:30 and awoke to the sound of the birds. We shared a breakfast and it was back to the beach until lunchtime when we began taking down our tents and most of us started heading home (although some were brave enough to stay another night). The awesome power of mothers was inspiring and hopefully memories to last a lifetime were made. Enjoy a few pictures from our trip (you can see more by visiting our photo albums at http://www.imagestation.com/; sign in as wakophotos and use the password eventphotos - as a side note, if you have more pictures of our trip please email them so we can add them to our album!).
